During Dr. Heidi Overton’s confirmation hearings, she did not answer all of the questions directly asked of her, like would she bend to the President if she strongly disagreed with his position based on medical grounds. There were also questions regarding the abortion pill and vaccines where her answers took (what one might call) a fairly safe walk without going over the danger line. However, she did hold her own against some strong questioning.
In the last few days, Dr. Scott Gottlieb and Dr. Mark B. McClellan, both of whom are former FDA Commissioners, have supported her nomination. I have tremendous respect for Dr. Gottlieb and believe he did a tremendous job as Commissioner, while navigating the Agency through the first Trump administration and making Agency decisions based on the science and not the politics. Likewise, Dr. McClellan served the Agency and the American public well during his tenure. Dr. Overton has also received an endorsement from former HHS official Steven Grossman as reported by FDA Webview. These names and endorsement in my opinion are significant and may ultimately tip the scales in favor of Dr. Overton’s nomination.
But when talking about Washington and current politics, nothing is ever certain. If confirmed, will Dr. Overton be able to negotiate the demands of the Agency and keep decisions based on science or will HHS Secretary Kennedy or President Trump come between her and science? If she can navigate through those hurdles, her tenure will be a success; if not, it might be fairly short!
