The FDA is looking for a few (or a lot) more good employees and is holding another virtual hiring event (here). Could FDA be looking to obligate a portion of the $277 million excess of GDUFA funds that have not yet been spent from the fees collected in the first 2.5 years of the program?

There may be other reasons for the hiring effort, including turnover of staff, retirements, moves to other organizational components within FDA, and staff moving to industry.  We don’t know for sure, but FDA claims it has met all of its GDUFA hiring goals, so something is happening.

The announcement for the event identified a number of different positions, including chemists, project managers, consumer safety officers, medical officers, pharmacists, nurse consultants, and various management specialists.  There is no indication in the offering that outlines the number of each category of position that the Agency is seeking to hire, but there is clearly a number of positions to be filled.

This is not the first event of this kind that FDA has held to rapidly staff up the 990 GDUFA positions, so if you are interested in working for the FDA in the GDUFA program, here is your second big chance to apply.
